Hi everyone,
Sorry for being out of touch for so long. I’ve been in Indonesia now for 5 days and not really done much.
Thursday was spent on the bus after being picked up from the airport by the other PA’s from the project. The buses are literally like a mini van and they pile as many people in as possible. The locals are really friendly though and no amount of backpacks and unknown luggage bothers them. Our massive backpacks were strapped to the roof of the van and I watched intently out of the window waiting for a corner, and the moment my bag flew off the roof into the undergrowth. Thankfully, three hours later it was still on the roof…PHEW
Friday we decided not to start work until Monday and had a long weekend. We didn’t really do much, I just sat around Coconut trying to figure out the Indonesian language, and just getting used to the place. Saturday was pretty much the same, except I got accustomed to the shower here. It’s like a big garbage bin that catches all the rain fall with a plastic type saucepan in it to throw the water over yourself. Refreshing but difficult. On Sunday all went down to the river and it was much easier to wash there. The current rinses the shampoo from your hair better too. After about half an hour frolicking in the water we did notice 3 big water buffalos on the edge of the shore, thankfully they were tied up. PHEW
All the locals loved 3 white people walking around the village. The house is really obscure too. The office is the center of it all, with the kitchen and 3 bathrooms coming off it on one side and another 3 bedrooms coming off the other side. All built above a pond, and surrounded by paddy fields. Very basic and out in the sticks. Don’t expect me to be using much toilet roll when I get back. Haha In fact just leave a bucket of water and a cup by the loo and I’ll be reet!
Anyway I shall post this before the internet cuts out again. But hopefully, I will be back before soon. We have 3 volunteers arriving on Monday, a Siingapore school group on the 17th June and then 4 more volunteers, for July, so all busy until then…
